Life in Australia
The following page provides you with questions asked by students on Life in Australia and what students attending the International School of European Aviation could expect in regards to where they will live, the towns culture and lifestyle.
Where will I fly?
ISEA currently has one campus in Bacchus Marsh: Bacchus Marsh is located near the outskirts of Melbourne, Victoria approximately 50km from the CBD. The airspace and conditions at our campus are ideal for completing the ATP program within 18 months.
Where will I live?
The Bacchus Marsh campus can assist with finding accommodation that suits your needs.
Is it expensive to live in Australia?
The cost of living in Australia is significantly lower than in many parts of Europe, which allows you to focus 100% on your studies. However there are plenty of part-time work opportunities at both of our campus locations if that may be of interest.
Can I work in Australia?
Working part-time can provide an avenue for meeting new people and earning extra spending money, but it should never be considered more than an `added bonus'.
You must have sufficient funds to cover all expenses before you leave your home country. You cannot rely on working in Australia to cover your course fees or living costs.
A student visa issued on or after April 26, 2008 will give you the right to work automatically. The work conditions of the visa are:
- Students and their dependants cannot work until the student has started studying in Australia
- Students cannot work more than 20 hours a week while their course is in session (excluding work done as a registered component of the course)
- Dependants cannot work more than 20 hours a week
- Department of Immigration and Citizenship
Tax file number
If you plan to work in Australia, you will need to obtain an Australian tax file number. This is a unique number issued to each taxpayer by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
Your Australian bank and employer will ask you to provide your tax file number when you open a new account or start a new job. If you do not provide them with this number, your bank will required to tax your interest at almost 50% and your employer will be required to take almost 50% of your wages in tax.
