  • Bacchus Marsh

Applying For Your Student Visa
All international students require a student visa (Vocational Education & Training Visa) to study with ISEA.

The student visa application process can be complicated. In order to apply for a visa you will need:

  • A valid passport
  • The electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE) issued by ISEA
  • Any other documentation required by the Australian Diplomatic Post

You must allow enough time for visa processing as this can be a lengthy process. Your nearest Australian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission will be able to advise you about current visa processing times.

For more information on applying for a student visa, click here and select your home country and the 572 VET visa.

If you are granted a student visa, you must abide by certain conditions including (but not limited to):

  • Study full-time
  • Satisfactory academic progress
  • Maintaining approved Overseas Student Health Cover
  • Remaining with ISEA for at least 12 months, or the duration of the course if shorter than 12 months
  • Notifying ISEA of your address in Australia and any subsequent change of address within seven days

Working During Your Studies
Working part-time can provide an avenue for meeting new people and earning extra spending money, but it should not be considered more than an 'added bonus'.

You must have sufficient funds to cover all expenses before you leave your home country. You cannot rely on working in Australia to cover your course fees or living costs.

A student visa issued on or after April 26, 2008 will give you the right to work automatically. The work conditions of the visa are:
  • Students and their dependants cannot work until the student has started studying in Australia
  • Students cannot work more than 20 hours a week while their course is in session (excluding work done as a registered component of the course)
  • Dependants cannot work more than 20 hours a week

Tax file number

If you plan to work in Australia, you will need to obtain an Australian tax file number. This is a unique number issued to each taxpayer by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Your Australian bank and employer will ask you to provide your tax file number when you open a new account or start a new job. If you do not provide them with this number, your bank will required to tax your interest at almost 50% and your employer will be required to take almost 50% of your wages in tax. Apply here for a tax file number.

Overseas Student Health Cover
The Australian Government requires international students have health insurance through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme and that they maintain insurance for the duration of their studies. Students from Sweden and Norway are exempt from this rule if they can provide proof of official health insurance cover from their home government provider.

There are four registered providers of OSHC, including Australian Health Management (AHM), ISEA's preferred provider. You can purchase Australian Health Management (AHM) OSHC through ISEA when paying your fee deposit.

If you decide to purchase your OSHC from another provider, you will not be disadvantaged but you must organise it directly with the provider:
  • BUPA Australia
  • OSHC Worldcare
  • Medibank Private

You must pay for OSHC before being issued with a student visa and you must have health cover for the entire length of the course. OSHC for 18 months on singles cover costs approximately $530.

The OSHC Worldcare fees are listed on the Offer of Admission letter. Further information about other OSHC providers is available on the Studying in Australia website.

Please note: Membership of health insurance schemes in your home country does not exempt you from paying the OSHC.

Pilot Identification Application Form

You must have:
  • Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC), and
  • Student Pilot Licence (SPL).

What is an ASIC?

An Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) is used to identify a person who has been the subject of a background check. An ASIC is required to obtain unescorted access to the security controlled areas of airports that have regular public transport (RPT) services. The ASIC scheme aims to reduce the risk of unlawful interference with aviation. ASICs are valid for up to two years. ISEA will send you an application form.
